Forecite uses standard abbreviations for different types of codes. Those abbreviations can be found below:

Since Forecite is indexed to CALJIC, searching for CALJIC numbers is easy. For example, to search for CALJIC 3.16, you would type 3.16 into the search box.

3. By Case Name or Citation:

To find a case or citation, simply enter all or part of the case’s citation. Since many cases are known only by one name involved, it is often helpful to not search for the entire citation. For example, if you were searching for references to People v. Geiger (84) 35 C3d 510, 526 [199 CR 45], you could search for People v. Geiger or just Geiger. Searching for Geiger might be more helpful since it would find references to the case that do not include the full citation.

For purposes of considering whether the prosecution has met its burden of disproving (self-defense/ [and/or] defense of another), self-defense is defined as a killing in which the person who killed:

1. Reasonably believed that (he/she) was defending a home against <insert name of decedent>, who (intended to or tried to commit <insert forcible and atrocious crime> / [or] violently[[,] [or] riotously[,]/ [or] tumultuously] tried to enter that home intending to commit an act of violence against someone inside);

2. Reasonably believed that the danger was imminent;

3. Reasonably believed that the use of deadly force was necessary to defend against the danger;

AND

4. Used no more force than was reasonably necessary to defend against the danger.

Alternative b:

To meet its burden of disproving (self-defense/ [and/or] defense of another) the prosecution must prove at least one of the following beyond a reasonable doubt:

1. Did not reasonably believe that (he/she/ [or] someone else/[or] __________ <insert name or description of third party>) was in imminent danger of being killed or suffering great bodily injury [or was in imminent danger of being (raped/maimed/robbed/ __________ <insert other forcible and atrocious crime>)];

2. Did not reasonably believed that the danger was imminent;

3. Did not reasonably believed that the use of deadly force was necessary to defend against the danger;

OR

4. Used more force than was reasonably necessary to defend against the danger.
